Such is the case since the historic backdrop in which baroque music arose was the rise of counter-reformation which was a movement in the religious sphere. It was only after the Enlightment and the French Revolution which took place in the late 18th century that European music shifted toward the more earthly and humanistic direction, with the coming of the romantic mentality that focused on individuals and personal feelings.
I would gladly hear different, or opposite opnions on the issue.
