原歌“多那多那”（Dona Dona)是用雅迪文（Yaddish)寫成的（雅迪文是歐洲猶太人的通用語言，屬於日耳曼高地語言，但用希伯來字母拚寫），它是為一部音樂劇“愛詩帖”（Esterke 1940 - 1941)而寫的，當時的歐洲正處於納粹年代。該曲是首小調(Am)，曲子比較舒緩，無奈甚於憂傷；但在無奈憂傷中帶有希望。這歌詞可以有各種不同的理解：但一般來講，這裏的牛代表正被壓往德軍集中營的一個猶太人，而農夫則代表納粹。 麻雀在開頭代表那些沒有被納粹迫害的人，但在最後則比喻為自由猶太精神。 薛龍·瑟空度本人將這首歌翻譯成英文，但它當時並不流行。直到1960年美國民歌手瓊·貝茲（Joan Baez）演唱了這首歌，從此“多娜多娜”開始風靡世界，並翻譯成了很多種語言。
