the lawyer represents the HOA. You can try to negotiate with the HOA direclty, but more than likely the HOA would defer you to the lawyer. And the lawyer would most certainly advise the HOA to do so.

If you hire a lawyer to represent you, for example, then your lawyer can't even contact HOA directly when knowing the HOA is represented. Your lawyer would have to contact the HOA's lawyer.
