I honestly do not think you should have your friend drive the rental. He's unauthorized driver in this case. You had violated the rental agreement with U-Haul by letting your friend driving the rental and therefore that coverage was gone.
And you might find it hard for any insurance policy (yours or his) to cover the loss.
