first, ask your lawyer the case number, so you can look it up by yourself. you can either call the family court, they will give you directions on how to find out, or look up online (not available in all states).

Usually child support is determined in two ways,
1) negotiate and agree upon an amount.
2) tell laywer to use the guideline. it's a formula court use to figure out the child support if both parties don't agree and it is based on both parties' socioeconomic status, income, tax status, cost of living, etc. The lawyer should have this program or he is a very, very cheap one. 5 minute job.

after you come up with a number, have court signed and filed to become a legal document. Have this child support deducted directly from his paycheck. (it's an option, all you need to do is to say "I want that." and sign).

You need to know the court procedure or you will be totally relied on the lawyer. www.nolo.com has good family law book, or you can borrow one from local library. if you are not comfortable with English, spend few bucks at Chinese book store and find a good one. sometimes Chinese newspaper has these articals as well. when you work with lawyer, don't just ask, sometimes you need to tell him or he gets fired.
