United States is still a free country. The problem

is some friends here just do not know what are their rights, and belive it is still OK even being offensed. One more thing, even if LZ stole (at the worst situation) something, she still had the right to ask a police officer to be present when searching her bag; otherwise she could refuse to do so. That is her right, and it does not matter whether she stole or not.
