sorry one thing forgot to mention. to claim the exempt status u MUST file as a non-resident alien (using a 1040nr), but the catch is that u lose the rights to use tuition credits (see publication 970). my experience is that, credits from education usually cover all ur taxes (including fed and state). but u should see it for ur case
