One thing to clarify - the federal tax return is for the Federal Income Tax only. The Med/SS tax you paid are for Medicare and SS use only, there will not be any refunds or underpayment(these % are at a set number and all employers should have withheld all of it from your pay).

So, of course the tax amount you owe is less than the total tax you paid (which inlude Med/SS).
