1, make a copy of contract.
2, take a few pictures about the condition after remodling.
3,write a claim letter to county consumer fair deaprtment, also require to that contract home improvement license.

Then you can go to your county consumer fair department, and fill out a form.
If it is true, the office will take all your money back from this contractor.

If he did your job without home improvement licese,according federal law, he has to pay fines and a few days in prison, so he must pay back all your money to avoid to get above penalty.

If you can get all your money back, I do not suggest to mention his status, give him a way to live.
