Canada citizen legal status after Layoff ???

Hi,
I am posting this for a friend.
He is a Canada citizen and worked in USA. But, he was laid off in July.

Right now, a company would like to hire him. But, that company was not sure about his legal status. My friend consulted some laywers and got different answers. Some laywers told him he is out of status now but others told him he is still legal since he is a Canada citizen (convered by NAFTA).

Does anybody know this for sure?
