Comcast want the $500

Comcast's balance sheet and cash flow are poor. They definitely want the $500, rather than a substitute device.

Further, each device has a unique MAC address. Comcast has the MAC address on their file. Any device you purchase from elsewhere won't match the MAC address of the original device. They will find it out and decline the substitute.
