Pain and suffering, for minor injury, is 3-5 times the medical expense. 

In this case, the negligent dentist should refund the original $1500, pay the speicalist's bill of $3500, and pay the pain and suffering 3-5 times of the bill from specialist ( 3-5 x $3500) = 10500 - 17500.  

There is also lost wages consideration, but I am omitting that for simplicity.   He's asking for damages roughly from $15000 to $22000. 

A lawyer would take 1/3 of payment.  So if the otherside ends up paying $15000, this young man would get $10000.
