First appearance is just arraingment, which means reading the charges and enter a plea.  First say plea not guilty. you will be provided with a court date for trial, usually a few weeks later. 

This will give you time to find a lawyer and prepare for trial.  

You will NOT have chance to provide any defense on the first court date.
