Great discussion by wal-mart. Unjust enrichment is a good argument for this case. The shear amount and the duration of the payment is enough to show that the money was not paid gratuitously. You are just friends, not related family members. Friends usually don't give a lot of money without the expectation that it would be repaid. I presume you are not benefitted in anyway by the payment of the money.
Did your friend give you back anything in return? Did he in any communication with you indicated that he acknowledged that he owed you the debt, but just refused to repay? If you can provide any of these, it would help your argument.
On a second point, the amount of money may have exceeded the upper limit a small claims court can award.
