should I pay the water bill after moving out 8 months

My previous lease ended last August and I paid all uitlity and water bills and rent on time. My cleaning is well done and the landlord returned all my deposits. Utility bill and water bill have the landlord name, he collected the fees by head counts.
Last week, the landlord called and wanted me to pay about $300 for the water bill from last amy to August since the water company noticed him that his water meter did not work properly. I think the landlord should be responsible for the water meter, my lease already end and I should not pay for this.

I question is whether I should pay the water bill after moving out 8 month ago?
