What you need to show are your high qualifications that are also in the national interest of the US.

If you claim you go NIW just because of you inability to get the LC, how do you convince the Immigration Officers that you are truly an exceptional individual?

You can say something like LC procedure is quite time consuming and blah blah and this procedure would bring negative effects on your work (and your research projects, your research field and your expertise are so important to the US interest) , so it's not in the national interest of the US.
