I was J-1 short term scholar(only six month). I want to switch to J-1 student. I was told this is a different category. So either I can go to canada to get my new visa or go back to china. However, I was quite ignorant, and I went to local INS to ask if I can switch my status within the USA. Guess what, the clerk said yes. That is when my nightmare begins. The reason I was denied in the denial notice is that the INS no longer grant this kind of extention, rather they ask me to contact my J-1 sponsor. This is the whole story.
