For US immigration, a lawyer is a must. Lawyer will check if all your documents are well prepared and fit the requirement for the category you applying. Most importantly, lawyer will write a cover letter, which is very hard to prepare by DIY.

But for Canadian immigration, lawyer doesn't help anything since everything is straight forward. They only provide some sample letters and fill the application for you, then charge you hundreds to thousand dollars. That's all.
