Is touring to Jamaica safe?

I booked a vacation to the Montego Bay in Jamaica in August, is it safe to travel there? What should I beware once landed in Jamaica, from taking a taxicab to taking a tour outside the hotel? Any tips to be safe is appreciated. I heard Jamaica has one of the highest murder rates in the world. I kind regret should not have booked the vacation going there.
