Normally you can stay in Canada as a visitor for up to 6 months (the Canadian Customs officer will give you the specific term when you enter Canada and tell him/her what your plan in visiting Canada). You can extend your stay there by submitting the application in advance at least 30 days before your stay ends.
By the way, you can not stay outside US for > one year without RP, otherwise your green card will be void.
