Usually, your university don't do the extension your J1 after you got waiver. But I know some people do it, it is Ok.

Another thing, H1 is very easy to get it if you work in University. The only thing is you need to wait 3 months if you don't apply with the premium process. Applying the waiver as early as possible, it seems that the J1 waive need longer time now.
