how's about his AOS status with 485 pending?
-I am not quite sure whether his I-485 will be affected or not because I am not sure that whether he go to the US-Canada border is considered as going outside U.S. If yes, his I-485 may be affected; and it no, his I-485 should have no problem.

So, he may just stay in AOS and use EAD to work. If his I-485 is denied, then he can get the H1 status at that time.
