In America, an M.D. is a professional degree (postgraduate level) like J.D., Psy.D, etc. A Ph.D. is a research oriented degree.
Did you earn your degree in medicine at the graduate level? If yes, it should be an M.D. Generally speaking, a M.D. in the U.S. is a terminal degree in the profession, again similar to a J.D.--terminal degree in the legal profession.
