An F1 student may engage in “volunteer” work if the position is historically unpaid (e.g. helping with a Red Cross blood drive) and no form of compensation will be received (including transportation reimbursement, meals, company “souvenirs”, etc.).

If the volunteer experience is related to the F-1 or J-1 student's field of study, then the student should contact the OISS to apply for Curricular Practical Training (CPT).

Anyway, if you want to engage in volunteer work, you should first discuss the opportunity with an international student advisor to make sure it qualifies as such.
