Legal? F1 do voluntary work

Thanks for all previous replies.

I am currently a PhD student in Finance, and have time to do voluntary work preferably in investment funds.

Is it legal for F1 to do voluntary work if some funds can take me? Is it possible for PhD student to do internships during studies (not after graduation)? Thanks.
