do you need to do fingerprint many times ?Thanks

If you have to wait for 5 years to get greencard, you have to do fingerprint everyyear? So, many fingerprints? Or you generally get your greencard after the second fingerprint? Thanks. My son still not receive his fingerprint notice after two years, what should I do. Please help
