one of my friend went back to China many times on business trips. Everything was fine. As long as you have all documents (employment letters..etc) and reserve some time for the H1B visa application in China. ( My friend had to wait for a week to get the visa issued in BJ one time).

If you feel getting visa in China is risky, getting it in Canada is a good alternative too. I got my there last year, very friendly officer and no hassle at all.
