Your background is similar or slightly better than mine in some aspects (I don't have media reports). I sent my CV out to two law firms and ask them to evaluate my case. Both said I had some chances. My company also did an evaluation, and has decided to sponsor it.

I think you can do something similar to mine. If it is your only opportunity to work in a profit company, why not try? (I am in the same situation, and my OPT will expire soon).
