your biggest loss is your lawyer fee. i would just go ahead hire another lawyer or carry it on myself from wherever he has finished.
DIY (i have just done my extension recently) has two steps:
1. labor: go to www.dol.gov, you can do the labor yourself. it is approved immediately. you do need some company info, such as, annual profit and revenue, # of employees, company contact person (such as your boss) etc. research on the www.dol.gov for the required salary info and code.
2. fill form I-129 and have it signed by the company contact person. send the I-129 form, the labor, check(from your company to INS) and copy of all your legal documents for every step of your legal status to INS.
by the way, INS is called a different name now.
