Am I in trouble? Help!

My H1B expires on 6/1. The extention was filed months ago but not approved yet. I have EAD and AP.

I plan to go to China in May and come back in June. I already got the flight ticket booked.

I just heard from the company attorney that my travel outside of US is NOT recommended since my extention has not been approved. Any suggestions on what I should do other than cancelling my trip?
