I am not very clear about your status. You said you have a H1-B with you which you used for only one year, and now you are still in school. Does that mean your current status is F1? When you entered, did you show the F-1? You also mentioned your H-1B is in the process? a new job?

I used the H1 to cross the border before, if you can provide more clarification, maybe I will be able to give a little more advice.
