I just came back using AP and entered from Chicago port.
There are 1-2 security guards in the hall, they'll ask you if you're citizen or PR, for AP, you'll be asked to go to visitor lanes, but, after all citizens and PRs have gone, the citizen/PR lanes will open to all visitors.
I was brought to the small room next to the citizen lanes where they have an officer who does real-time checks, anybody who is a little bit questionable will be brought to the small room, but as I know, almost all APs will go to that room. It took about 30 minutes for me in the room, the officer didn't ask me any question, just checked on the PC then stamped on the I-94...
You need to show your AP two times in China: at the times you check-in and pass China border security, then you need to show the AP at Chicago to the USCIS officer.
