I'll have a back up plan if I were you just in case

Anything can happen. Why not find an employer to sponsor you just in case? I don't know your profession, but as far as I know, the job market is good. I got 4 offers in 3 weeks when I got interview notice from USCIS. I know it is hard to concentrate in job hunting giving your current situation, but it is always better to have a back up. Like us Chinese saying says, "Don't hang on one tree."
