Maximum is three years for one-time H-1B extension. You can extend your H-1 less than three years, such as 6 months, etc. In your case, you do not need to extend your status from Jan. to July 2008 becasue your current H-1B status will still be valid before July 2008. You just need to extend from July 2008 to the last date of your total 6-year period.
