EAD approved, but my wife wants to use H1B, how

does it work?

Today , my wife's H1B with original company expire. The new company already submitted the extension, but the attorney didn't submit it yet. Can it be submitted tomorrow that my wife's h1b still can be extended?
To double check, can my wife stay at home with the EAD without changing to H4?
