It's used to be 3 copies,
- airline takes one as your valid visa to US
- CBP keeps one when you are admitted
- you keep one after it is stamped

Now the airline may not keep one any more, but CP still does. When you use the only copy next time you enter US, CBP will make a copy and return it to you.
