NY is quite expensive. On average, the salary should be around $15,000 higher than other places (except for CA). So 40% * 30000 is not really a good reason. Why not just said family issues. BTW, if your friend left his previous boss in the middle of a project, don't expect to get a good letter. Nobody will like this.
