help!!!File I-485 for a kid traveling in China now

My family will file I-485 before 8/17/2007. But my son is traveling in China now. Does he have to come back to US before 8/17/2007 to file his I-485. Can we file for him? He has H4 and doesn't need AP or visa to come back, since he is a Canadian citizen. Thanks.
