If you forget to turn in

you can tell the VO that the airline officer told you that it's ok to keep the old I-94. If you are still required to get a new one, you should mail the old on back. Ask the VO the mailing address. Each of his happened to me once and it was OK. You are supposed to turn in the old and get a new one on your arrival.
