My I-20 expired, please help. Thanks

I didn't realize that my I-20 expired one month ago. I planned to do my defense this week and graduated this December. The advisor in the international office will call the immigration department about activating my status and extending my I-20 to the end of this semester, but she was not sure that it would be successful. Now I am the grace gap and i have to leave America at the end of Nov. My hu*****and is working here with a H1b visa and my son is just one year old. It's a nighmare. Can I get my I-20 extensin? If not, what can I do? Thank you very much.
