How can H1B I485 Pending visit Canada with AP?

I am on H1B visa, my I485 is pending. I'd like to visit Canada. I guess
1. Apply a Canada Visa;
2. On my way travel back, show the AP and the passport.
I'd appreciate if you can share the experience if you have done this before.
