share your AP experience

I'd like to use AP to travel to China and back within a month. Anybody can share your experience of using the AP? Procedure, docs, and questions/answers to be prepared when returning to US? When should I apply for EAD card renew? (My EAD/AP would expire in Aug 07, and I'll be using AP and EAD in Jan 07).
