How do you know you are in background checking?

I am in I485 pending now. My case status was updated in Jan. And recently I found the LUD was updated in May ( I just know how to check LUD), but the status was the same. How do I know what the USCIS was doing to my case? A lot people mentioned their case were in background checking. How do they know?
