I think it is a little bit hard for you to apply for NIW if your new major is totally different from your old one. But if they are very simular, you can definitely try NIW. Since you are not doing any research work right now, it is hard to convince people what you are doing is national interest favored. Maybe it is good to wait until you involve in research again to I140. Just some personal point of views for your reference.
