This can only have three outcome:
1. You told the truth about your over-stay. Automatically, you will be hit with a 5 years ban. Forget about TN.
2. You insist on went back to Canada, get your TN.
3. You insist on went back to Canada, but somehow they find it out. You get a bad record.
For a Canadian citizen, 1&3 are equally bad, what's good about US except job opportunity ? Frankly, I don't care if they have 10,000 bad records on me if I no longer want to work there.
So, insists on you are in Canada since your layoff. But be prepared, think about all possible questions over and over. Also, fly a mid-morning flight through Toronto or Montreal Airport. At that time the officer are usually busy, they often stamp a TN for you without much questions.
Not a time to be straight
