Canadian do not need visa to enter US, but Canadian do need B2 permit, which is given implicitly at the port of entry. You didn't apply for B2 permit after layoff, so yo have broken US Immigration law. Only option for you is to hide it, honesty can only hurt you here.

I have been in US for 3 years on TN, I am only here to make money. I don't care if they ban me for life if I no longer work here.
