you should bring him to leave China to renew his Chinese travel document before it expiring,travel document can replace at any Chinese consulate even in third country.
Now itis easy: first apply for Chinese travel document
within USA,then travel to China or any other country with US passport,he will recover his US citizenship status when he come back to USA with US passport.
