Can part time job help keep H1B visa status?

There will be one month gap between the end of my current non-profit H1B visa and the possible profit H1B visa starting from Oct. 1. I'm afraid asking my advisor to extend one month will cost him too much. So I'm wondering if he can pay me part time,say, 10% appointment; in this way, he won't pay too much. Can I keep my visa status with the part time job? Thanks.
