Need help!!! One of my friends are waiting for his green card an

he wants to invite his father visit him. If his father keep staying in USA illegally after the expiration of visa (there is no another choice), his green card or citizen application will be affected? Is it possible to apply the green card for his father after my friend get the citizenship?
