Do stay and try to find job ASAP (immediately is better than later) and have the new sponsoring employer file H1 transfer with premium service. Even if the COS part may be (or may not) denied (no I-94 on the I-797 paper), you still have a good chance to get visa in China and reenter as H1. The success chance depends on how short your status gap is.
